Anga Center for Climate Justice, Health Equity & Community Well-being

The Anga Center for Climate Justice, Health Equity, and Community Well-being is a multi-year project that aims to improve climate justice, health, and overall well-being in East Africa. The Center focuses on understanding how climate change affects people’s health and lives, and on strengthening these outcomes by building strong research teams and working closely with communities that are most affected by climate change.

Why now: East Africa faces high risks from climate change and extreme weather. Rising temperatures and changing rainfall patterns are already affecting people’s health and well-being. Many of the communities most affected contribute the least to climate change and are rarely included in climate and health research. Working with these communities is important to create practical solutions that reduce health inequalities linked to climate change.

Expected outcomes: The Center aims to support research that advances climate justice, improves health equity, and strengthens community well-being. It will build local and regional research capacity by forming long-term partnerships across different disciplines and with communities. It will also empower climate-vulnerable communities through ongoing engagement and community-driven research. Together, these efforts will help create a sustainable system for generating evidence that improves health and well-being and contributes valuable climate and health knowledge in East Africa and beyond.

Funding: This project is funded by National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and John E. Fogarty International Center for Advanced Study in the Health Sciences
