Peer Support Worker (PSW)

Role Purpose

The Peer Support Worker (PSW) will use their lived experience to build strong, person-centred relationships with individuals experiencing homelessness and severe mental illnesses. Through mutual support, the PSW will inspire hope, provide practical and emotional assistance, and connect individuals to resources that promote recovery, resilience, and well-being.

Key Responsibilities: Direct Peer Support

â—Ź Build supportive, trusting relationships with peers rooted in shared experience

â—Ź Help individuals identify and work towards personal priorities and goals

â—Ź Provide emotional support, creating safe and non-judgmental spaces to reflect and plan for the future

â—Ź Support peers in building and strengthening their social networks and community ties

â—Ź Walk along side individuals as they navigate systems, attend appointments, and complete practical steps toward recovery

â—Ź Share personal experiences where helpful, to offer new perspectives and challenge beliefs.

● Promote self-advocacy by raising awareness of rights, providing information, and uplifting peers’ voices.

Team & Service Contribution

● Share insights on community-based resources to enrich the team’s knowledge and referral pathways.

â—Ź Identify service gaps and suggest practical improvements.

â—Ź Model recovery-focused, person-centred practice in all interactions.

â—Ź Challenge poor practice appropriately and raise concerns through proper channels.

â—Ź Support colleagues with compassionate perspectives on language, dignity, and assumptions made about peers.

Professional Conduct

â—Ź Be consistent and reliable in time keeping and follow through on agreed actions.

â—Ź Provide clear expectations of the support ordered, maintaining trust and transparency.

â—Ź Maintain confidentiality and uphold the rights and dignity of all individuals supported.

Person Specification Essential:

â—Ź Lived experience of mental health challenges, and homelessness.

â—Ź Demonstrated use of healthy coping skills and strategies to support their own well-being.

â—Ź Ability to use personal experiences constructively to support and inspire others.

â—Ź Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build trust.

â—Ź Commitment to person-centred, recovery focused support.

â—Ź Reliability, consistency, and ability to work as part of a team.

â—Ź Ability to facilitate group discussions or peer-led sessions.

â—Ź Should be willing to be trained to mentor other peers.
