Africa Institute of Mental and Brain Health (AFRIMEB) partnered with Nation Media Group (NMG) to host a Health Summit focusing on the state of mental health in the country. The long day event, held at the Nairobi Hospital Convention Center, saw the attendance of stakeholders in the mental health space, such as medical doctors, activists, people with lived experience, and researchers, among others. It was a session of intense vulnerability, with participants sharing raw experiences of different mental health conditions through poignant testimonials.
Professor Ndetei, in his opening remarks, emphasized the rapid growth of research in mental health, citing an abundance of publications from academic and research institutions. “When we started this journey, there was little focus on mental health; however, right now, it is commendable that we have made many strides as a country, and we can begin to see a future where we attain mental wellness for all,” he said.
There were echoing calls to widen and promote conversations about mental health to silence the stigma that impedes treatment once and for all. The pervasive use of technology and abuse of alcohol and drugs were some of the risk factors identified to perpetuate mental illness among the youth. Principal Secretary of Public Health, Mary Muthoni, said that the government will escalate mental health interventions to ensure that all Kenyans access the highest standard of mental health care.
