The HOPE project aims to improve outcomes for people who are homeless and have severe mental illness by developing effective interventions that respond to the prioritized needs of people who are homeless and have SMI in Kenya, Ghana, and Ethiopia.
Why now: The co-occurrence of homelessness and severe mental illness (SMI) is a health and social emergency affecting an estimated 28-36 million people in low-and lower-middle-income countries (LLMICs)
Homeless persons with SMI are at a high risk of human rights violations, premature mortality, and social exclusion. The absence of evidence on effective interventions is a potent barrier to global action.
Intended outcome: Development of interventions that respond to the prioritized needs of people who are homeless and have severe mental illness in Kenya, Ghana, and Ethiopia
Funders: National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR).
Research Lead: Prof Charlotte Hanlon, Prof David Ndete, Dr Victoria Mutiso, Christine Musyimi
